The map was specifically made for the Equity Summit 2011 to drive discussions on policy advocacy, the Occupy movement, and social determinants of health. Both the Gini Coefficient and the Diabetes rates were drawn from two independent sources, yet look like mirror images of each other.

Using a mashup of Web 2.0 technology, the entire map and its data were derived from free online tools to represent the democratization of both data and tools for analysis. The online mapping application used was IBM's ManyEyes.com website. Additional editing of images was created using an online image editor, LunaPic.com. Additional background stock images were gathered from online image searches using Bing.

The Gini Coefficient data by county was calculated by Dr. Mark L. Burkey from North Carolina A&T State University using American Community Survey data for 2005-9-2009 and posted online at www.burkeyacademy.com. The Diabetes data came from the Centers for Disease Control and prevention website at http://apps.nccd.cdc.gov/DDT_STRS2/NationalDiabetesPrevalenceEstimates.aspx.

The map "mashup" was created by Edwin Quiambao, Data Analyst for the Annie E Casey Foundation, on 10/25/2011.
